Because odd numbers are an even number plus one. If there are two odd numbers there would be 2 extra ones. 2 is even and we already know odd numbers are just even number plus one so if those ones weren’t there there would just be even (hope this made sense)

wrong, in the final equation you have 2(a+b+1) and say it's even, but what if a+b+1 is odd, then you sum 2 odd numbers and basically you prove that adding odds is even by assuming adding odds is even

Why don’t we use 2x-1 for odd numbers. Because by definition 1 is an odd number but if we use 2x+1 as our general odd formula, this would imply that 0.5 is an integer. Surely 2x-1 is neater
