I no longer have my dog, and tartar is what took him from me. I never brushed his teeth growing up; I didn’t realize how important dental care was. Thick yellow tartar covered every one of his teeth. I tried brushing, dental chews and oral treats for a long time, yet nothing improved his condition. Worried about him, I took him to the vet. Severe pus‑filled periodontal disease was ruled out, so I naively believed it was only a cosmetic issue and wouldn’t threaten his life. I gradually stopped keeping up with his oral care. As he grew older, he started avoiding food. He would take a couple of bites then pull away in pain, constantly paw at his mouth, and whimper in agony late at night. I booked an anesthesia‑aided dental cleaning, but he could not survive the procedure and passed away on the exam table. I thought teeth cleaning was no big deal and ignored the anesthesia risks for senior dogs. Watching him lie motionless, never to wake up, guilt overwhelms me. I failed you in this life.
