@softlauncheverything: @spennnnnnnnn1 originally discussed this which triggered my thoughts on the topic. Arguing with NT people as an ND person is so frustrating. I am trying to solve the root of the issue and I feel like I am continually misunderstood despite trying to make my point as clear as I possibly can #arguments #neurodivergent #adhd #neurodiverse

I have a theory that neurotypicals don't get the right kind and amount of stimulation so they argue just for the sake of arguing to get their Daly dose of having to interpret something even when there is nothing to be interpreted what do you guys think about this theory

i was once labeled as “hateful” by a white neurotypical cause i said in a utopian society all the people who challenges the status quo were centered and the basic and generic people were ignored

You get the look. And the NT is thinking "he's trying to say something. Let us try to think what is the meaning behind it based on my own way of talking." 🙄

Basically neurotypicals argue like lawyers trying to win…while neurodivergents argue like scientists to discover the root cause

Yes and it’s even worse when it’s two ND people arguing! Both trying to be understood whilst trying to remember that the other person needs that of you as well.

Neurotypicals argue to be right, neurodivergents argue to understand both sides.

Yes and this has led to me chronically over explaining and not being able to relax until they confirm to me that they understand what I mean

Neurotypical people would usually rather argue that they are right (even when proven wrong) than holding the correct information. It’s unbelievable to me. I’d rather be proven wrong and have the right info for next time. I genuinely don’t understand how others aren’t naturally like this.

I've lost my job of 15 years after four months of dispute with this exact dynamic. I kept thinking if I just explain it one more time, they'll understand. the thing NT management kept doing is making appeals to authority rather than genuinely examining the facts. I wished I had an NT guidebook. I ended up having a nervous breakdown. I was explaining myself on a loop and spiral every day and nothing was landing. It was exactly as though they didn't want it to. In the end I got a version of the moment I wanted. My boss was distraught with the frustration of the situation too and pulling her hair out and she got this point of absolutely giving up and then I calmly made my safety point again and it finally registered. She then looked like she had been punched in guts and she hugged me. But it was too late. HR had already decided to end my job. It is like they don't want the truth but mistake power for truth. I do not have a need to be right. I have a need for clarity. If they prove me wrong I am still happy to have the clarity.

the phrase "don't talk back to me" was SOOOOO frustrating as a child because of exactly this! tint me wasn't talking back to prove i was right i was just trying to help them understand 😭

when you say a normal sentence and they get offended because they’ve found a secret hidden meaning behind your words and get annoyed when you try to explain that you didn’t mean it in that way

a lot of neurotypicals are covert narcissists, but they don't know they are. Coming up against a neurodivergent tends to expose them... not all neurotypicals, but a lot that I come across!

I feel this. My body also gets overwhelmed with big emotions (frustration, sad, happy, angry, confused) and involuntarily cry when discussing things. But I am always extremely clear to whoever I chat to that it is not for sympathy or manipulation it’s just genuinely something I can’t control. But alas it makes neurotypical people hesitate to chat to me seriously

tbh there are also neuro divergent people who argue like that as well, especially on topics that are also deep rooted beliefs and connected to their extremely strong moral compass (tho, I do find it most common in conservative neuro divergent people so there's also that). the amount of times my father has shut down conversations and refused to hear anything from my point of view just because it goes against his beliefs, yeah...
