"It's like Regal wrestling Ted Kennedy" - Bobby Heenan. The hard-hittting, stiff as hell and memorable bout between Antonio Inoki and Lord Steven Regal, at Clash of the Champions 28. In his autobiography, Regal wrote: "I went to his hotel room earlier in the day to discuss how the match should go. "He told me to beat him up throughout. 'Okay,' I thought. "The only trouble was I did it a bit too well. "Right at the beginning of the match I kneed him in the side of the ribs, knocking all the wind out of him. "That killed the match more or less because it meant he couldn't do a lot. "On the outside it might have looked like not much was happening. But I was beating him up, just like he'd asked me. I hit him hard, kicked him and just generally pounded the hell out of him. Of course, he won in the end. The Japanese legend legit chokes out the Lord at the end, too! Regal also answered critics of this bout: "A lot of people didn't get that match - plenty of wrestling fans thought it was the worst match of all time. "But Inoki loved it - and that's all that mattered to me. It wasn't his show but I knew what the whole thing was all about." I didn't realise that Antonio Inoki had asked to face Regal, as Eric Bischoff tried to repair relations between NJPW & WCW Regal revealed: "This was an honour." "Shortly afterwards WCW signed a contract with New Japan for a huge amount of money to swap talent. "I knew our match had played a part in that happening. "It was a real coup for WCW. Back then, New Japan was the biggest and most profitable wrestling company in the world." #OnThisDayInWWE
