Europe is home to a diverse range of official currencies, reflecting the continent’s varied political and economic landscape. While the euro (€) is the most widely used currency—serving as the official currency of 20 European Union member states within the euro area—many European countries continue to maintain their own national currencies, including the British pound, Swiss franc, Polish złoty, Hungarian forint, Czech koruna, Romanian leu, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Danish krone, Icelandic króna, Ukrainian hryvnia, Serbian dinar, Turkish lira, and others. The euro remains one of the world’s most important reserve and trading currencies, facilitating trade, travel, and economic integration across much of Europe. At the same time, several countries have chosen to retain independent monetary policies by keeping their national currencies, while others are legally committed to adopting the euro in the future once they meet the required convergence criteria. The future appearance of the euro is also set to evolve. On 23 July 2026, the European Central Bank (ECB) unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next generation of euro banknotes, divided into two themes: “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds.” The ECB has also launched a public consultation, allowing Europeans to express their preferences before a final design is expected to be selected later this year. The redesign aims to modernise the banknotes while highlighting Europe’s shared heritage, biodiversity, and cultural identity.
