These male kabuki actors/escorts were initially very young, which might’ve made them even more popular than women. Also, black teeth was a popular fashion in this time – for those cought off guard by the image. Source: R Taggart Murphy “Japan and the shackles of the past” details how Kabuki theatre was used as cover for escorts, remaining as popular, if not more so when these actresses were replaced by an all male casts. “Everyone understood that the girls were available later for private dalliance for those with the means to pay. Fights broke out among the young samurai who were the principal patrons (indeed the word kabuki actually comes from a verb that had been applied to these young men meaning something like “being weird” or “offbeat”). Of course, anything that smacked of disorder attracted the attention of shogunal officials, and they promptly banned women from the stage. Not missing a beat, Okuni simply substituted boys, which in the pederasty-soaked samurai culture of the early seventeenth century, hardly damaged business. It may actually have helped since, featuring boys rather than girls, the Kabuki attracted the attention of the third shogun, Iemitsu, a notorious pederast, who arranged for command performances. With his death in 1651, however, and samurai now brawling over boys instead of girls, the Shogunate restricted the stage to males over the age of 15. It was from that point on that the Kabuki matured into the great theater we know today. “
