I was three years old when I came to the United States. Fast forward 50 years, with countless summers spent in Serbia, and I can honestly say I would never move back permanently. We sold everything we owned there over 10 years ago and have never looked back. Every country has its own challenges, but many of the countries in the former Yugoslavia still struggle with inadequate healthcare systems and ongoing corruption. While I enjoy visiting, living there full-time is a very different reality. I can see myself spending summers in retirement in the Split area of Croatia, but only seasonally. These places are wonderful to visit, but they’re much harder to live in if you’re earning and living on local wages. It’s a very different experience when you’re able to support that lifestyle with income you’ve earned in the United States
