@mattypowz.md: Is this skin cancer? 🤔 No. But that’s not the most interesting part of this case… At first glance, most people notice the lighter patches on her back. Others focus on the mole. The art of dermatology isn’t just recognizing disease. It’s knowing what each finding needs. The lighter patches are post inflammatory hypopigmentation left behind after psoriasis was treated with phototherapy. They’re common, harmless, and can take months to gradually repigment. They needed reassurance. Then there was the mole. On dermoscopy, it had a subtle target like appearance without features that strongly suggested melanoma. The pathology showed a low grade dysplastic nevus, not skin cancer. So why biopsy it? Because the patient felt the mole had been changing and had a history of dysplastic nevi. Those details changed the equation. 🩺 Dermatology isn’t just about recognizing patterns. It’s about combining what you see with the patient’s history, risk factors, symptoms, and concerns to decide whether a lesion should be reassured, monitored, or biopsied.
