@flo_finds1: Lost for 600 years... Here's a follow-up on the large iron key found in a river last weekend. I was hoping there'd be details, good iron inside that crusty lump! It's as exciting as it is nerve-wracking, especially when you're promising updates on here 😅 I've been lucky to discover a few early keys over the years, and each time you can't help but wonder about the hand that once held it, the lock it turned and the door it was made to open. This beautiful object with kidney shaped bow and elongated pointed end post dates to the 14th or 15th century. A big thank you to Susan @thames_tyne_mudlark for kindly sharing a fantastic resource of Thames found examples. This simple object that once opened doors now unlocks the imagination with many possible stories. It invites us to imagine the lives it touched and the secrets it may have kept... (Cleaning method: short soak in white vinegar, rinsed and thoroughly dried out, then cleaned with wooden picks, wire brushes and a multitool.
