@stankomachines: Did you know one of the most expensive and neglected parts of a manual lathe is the apron? It lubricates itself and helps supply oil to the carriage and cross slide, but operators often forget to check the level. Then coolant gets inside, and now the apron is running dry, full of coolant, or operating with a contaminated mixture. When it fails, removal, teardown, repair, installation, and testing can take around forty labor hours. At current shop rates, that can mean $5K to $6K — and that's BEFORE parts and lost production. For the operator, moving a heavy carriage all day means constant cranking. Some machines do not even have rapid traverse. On the Smart Lathe Gen 2, powered movement is controlled with a button, while the hand-wheels remain light and familiar. The motion system uses a ball screw and ball nut with automatic lubrication.
