@whatslaps: On the surface Jaylen Brown looked like a bonafide superstar last year. He scored as many points as Anthony Edwards. He had more assists and rebounds than Ant. He had more steals than Jamal Murray, Paolo Banchero, and Jalen Brunson. If you were checking box scores every night you would have loved what you saw from Brown and you would have noticed the Celtics were winning games on top of it all. But once you dig beneath the surface the numbers start to tell a different story. Jaylen Brown shot 34 percent from three last year. Not terrible but definitely not good and among the top scorers in the NBA he ranked ninth in three point percentage which puts him only ahead of Devin Booker on that list. Brown also turns the ball over at a higher rate than most players. Now to be fair Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic turn it over even more but those guys are the complete focal point of their offenses and turnovers come with that territory. The more revealing number for Brown is his assist to turnover ratio which is simply assists divided by turnovers. His teammate Payton Pritchard had a ratio of 3.7 during the regular season and an absurd 7.8 in the playoffs meaning Pritchard was getting guys open and almost never giving the ball away. Jaylen Brown's ratio was 1.4 meaning he was generating almost as many turnovers as he was assists. Passing and ball handling have never been his strongest qualities and the numbers confirm that. Now does that automatically mean Payton Pritchard is more valuable than Jaylen Brown? Not necessarily. But it does explain why the analytics crowd has serious reservations about a supermax contract built around a player with those kinds of efficiency numbers. #NBA #JaylenBrown #BostonCeltics #paytonpritchard #sportstiktokcontest

He had most total turnovers last year. Doncic and Jokic might have had more turnovers per game. They also had far more assists than Brown. Brown was T2 in offensive fouls and traveling violations also.

i mean that’s pritchard a job. he’s a role player and more importantly he is the point guard. it’s not JBs main job to pass unlike pritch

This is poor decontextualized stat analysis. Brown was surrounded by a team of rookies, Prichard was the only consistent shooter and even he was dealing with way more coverage than he ever had to before. If your teammates can’t execute and everyone chucks 3s and relies on you to drive the ball you might not have as many assists and might turn over the ball a bit. Seriously if you don’t watch the Celtics just stay off this topic and dont assume stats can replace a season of observation

He's overpaid. He's overrated. He's the 7th best player on a roster. he's a smartass. He's a ballhog. He's a champion & a FMVP.
