Most red states are economically cooked. Like, beyond belief, just miles and miles of poverty. Texas is the only exception, of course only in blue areas though. The rest is rural poverty and abandoned towns. So, it can be very cheap to live in red states. The trade off is there are significantly less economic opportunities, so people are poor anyway.

I'll tell you something that's infuriating, being born and raised in Texas one of the cheapest places to live in the US, as a 90s baby. witnessing a real dollar menu and life actually being livable, now that I finally am old enough and I have money it's just as expensive as California was 10 years ago! and the minimum wage has not changed! I'm lucky if I can find a job for $20 an hour....
