The Gishora drummers are among the best-known guardians of Burundi's royal drumming tradition. They perform at the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, a historic royal site near the city of Gitega, where drumming has been preserved as both a musical art and a cultural institution for generations. In Burundi, the great royal drums—called ingoma—have traditionally been much more than instruments. They symbolized the authority of the king, the unity of the kingdom, communication of important national events, and spiritual and ceremonial power. Historically, these drums were played during major occasions such as royal coronations, victories, harvest celebrations, funerals, and declarations of peace. They were considered sacred and were entrusted to hereditary families of specialist drummers rather than ordinary performers. A Gishora performance combines large barrel drums, carved from single tree trunks, powerful ensemble rhythms, choreographed movement, including high leg lifts and marching formations, and call-and-response singing. The visual spectacle is as important as the music. The synchronized entrances—with drummers balancing large drums while marching—have become internationally recognizable. ► Trip to Burundi 🗓️ From 13 to 19 of September 2026 ℹ️ More info at lastplaces.com ©️ Photo by @anibal_bueno and video by @joanriera_anthropologist #lasttribes #travelisknowledge #lastplaces #natgeotravel #natgeoadventure #culturaltourism #tribes #tribaltrips #responsibletourism #responsibletravel #travelphotography #natgeopeople #discoverearth #culturalheritage #indigenousvoices #triballife #localstories #offthebeatentrack #consciousadventure #slowtravel #culturalexplorer #ethicaladventure #remoteplaces #preservetraditions #natgeohumanity #burundi #burundi🇧🇮 #burundionthemap #gishora #gishoradrumsanctuary
