In January 1970, Nigeria was emerging from nearly three years of civil w@r. Following the c0llapse of B!afra and the formal end of the c0nfl!ct on January 15, attention quickly turned to the enormous task of rebuilding the former w@r areas, assisting millions affected by the c0nfl!ct and reintegrating the Igbo into a united Nigeria. . It was against this background that British journalist Robert Kee travelled through Nigeria for the Thames Television current-affairs programme “This Week,” speaking with people about the situation and what the end of the w@r would mean for the country. Their views reflected some of the major questions facing Nigeria at the time, particularly attitudes towards Igbo reintegration, reconciliation between communities and whether national unity could be rebuilt after the divisions of the previous years. . General Yakubu Gowon’s government publicly adopted the position of “no victor, no vanquished” and placed reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction at the centre of its post-w@r programme. In practice, however, reintegration involved difficult questions surrounding resettlement, employment, property, economic recovery and the return of people to communities and institutions d!sr¥pted by the w@r. . These interviews, recorded in the immediate aftermath of the c0nfl!ct, capture some of those views at the very moment Nigeria was beginning its post-w@r journey and confronting what the future of a united country would mean in practice. . . . . #NigerianHistory #1970s #HistoricalFootage #Throwback #AfricanHistory
