As a SAHM for 18 months who has had the privilege to experience both sides of the spectrum of motherhood, I think one reason why working mom guilt is so bad is because we inherently feel we’re sacrificing our presence for our children with our own career aspirations, our own needs and personal space as we delicately balance the new motherhood season of sacrifice vs. self love for a baby who needs us. This isn’t a SAHM vs. Working Mom comparison post—because the truth is, the system is designed to make all of us feel like we’re failing somewhere. When I stayed home full-time, the guilt was about lost identity, financial independence, and whether I was doing
When I stayed home full-time, the guilt was about lost identity, financial independence, and whether I was doing "enough" beyond domestic labor. Now, balancing work and parenting, the guilt simply shifts shape: Am I missing milestones? Am I checking emails when I should be present? Am I delegating care because I have to, or because I want to? Here’s the unpolished reality we rarely admit out loud: Mom guilt isn't evidence that you’re failing; it’s evidence of a structural setup that expects mothers to work like they don't have children, and raise children like they don't have careers. We are constantly negotiating space for ourselves in a culture that romanticizes total self-erasure as the ultimate benchmark of good parenting. But needing a career, personal fulfillment, or just mental breathing room doesn't make you less of a mother—it makes you a whole human being. Whether you're clocking into an office, managing a home, or straddling the line between both: the guilt finds us anyway. The trick isn't trying to eliminate it completely, but recognizing who the system was built for—and refusing to let it define your worth. What side of the guilt spectrum are you carrying this Sunday evening? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇
