feel like people dont understand this scene properly, Eren helped him purely due to his selfish reasoning of wanting to find out whether helping him would make a difference later on or not, not because he actually wanted him to not endure a painful death(not saying the rumbling death was any better but yea). he went on w saving him to prove his own selfishness wrong which did not work in the end because the saving act as a whole was driven by his selfish desire and guilt that drove him to attempt proving himself wrong, that he isnt as horrible as he is. something would have changed if this saving came with a good intention, thats also why nothing changes when Eren supposedly 'attempts' to change the path he already forged upon himself, because he just tests it to see his own character standview and reflect on it, not because he genuinely wanted it to change.
