@dr.starkid: The Odyssey was a great movie! I thought Christopher Nolan’s adaptations made the story much better and deepened the themes.

They were “the people from the sea” so many feared.

it's about perspective. homer's original version fans will complain about the lack of god representation and mythology, but nolan version's message is very clear: men created the monstrosity that ruins our civilization, with their greed and violence. all of the challenges they faced is a consequence of their own horrendous actions, not just because he pissed off a god's son lol. there are aspects of the movie i didn't like but the message is not one of them imo

the movie doesn't show rape during the war it's just implied, but the transformation into pigs is showing the men being violated in return

Circe basically said they are in their true form as pigs. Mind blown instantly about all the other animals!!!

The monter designs were 🔥🔥 too. The cyclops' malformed face was such a cool choice, and the Laistrygonians being fully armored really added to the message and themes.

They broke their oath to not eat the Apollo’s cows so of course they would have broke their promise to not hurt Circe!

Like all of Nolan’s films, it has to be watched multiple times to appreciate all of the nuances.

That's why everyone kept referring to the men of the sea being bad...🤔

magic is just science not yet discovered-my thought is: gods makes us do stuff because we don’t yet understand human behavior.

Personally I think another subtext is American post-war history, with the 'sacking of Troy' being the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That broke the 'contract' and rules of war, it was an unspeakable act of violence against civilians, and it introduced to the world a new era of fear. Nuclear destruction is "the men from the sea" that are referred to with fear throughout the movie (who are actually Odysseus and his men).

I think this is partially why Elon is so angry about Nolan’s take on it, because to him, empathy/decency/kindness is a flaw and not a strength

I actually think that the gods have plenty of representation in Nolan’s Odyssey having Athena show up as a victim and be Odysseus’s guilt. Having the gods punish Odysseus and his men for their desecrating Zeus’s law. Having the gods be a inevitable force of justice and not as any other character to me was almost more of a theistic view of the Greek gods to me made them feel more real

Exactly, it’s a more grown up version of the story. It’s not all put on gods

I loved how they showed both scenes for the Battle of Troy — first perspective in the lens of the heroic story and the second after Odysseus was healed of the truth and what led to their tragic tragic journey.

Breaking Zeus’ law broke the social contract. Once they did that they couldn’t be received bc they couldn’t be trusted and they were treated as such. Would you be hospitable to someone who killed their last hosts? Nah you’d pop them on your doorstep just to be safe. At that point no one can trust anyone. That’s why the consequences reverberate so far and Odysseus is so distraught once he understands the full consequences.

Agreed tbh I just wish the siren scene had more meat to it. I remember reading when I was a kid and that was my favourite part
