It’s funny. I became a house husband because it made more sense financially. It meant I was now the one to manage the house. I clean and cook, I support her after a long day at work. I put aside my career for hers. I also have to add, my PhD studies were in Social Foundations of Education. My entire program was a study of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Hell my entire work centered around identity and the manipulation of it… and it was not until I “became a woman” (my wife and I joke), that I began to get a glimpse, a whisper of understanding. I don’t think men understand how women feel because we are not remotely trained to be within that world. Perspective is gained by walking in another’s shoes, or at least observing it with care and honesty. I simply believe we live in a culture that ensures that division not only exists but is reified.

Amazing how many men on the comments still don't get it. I'd be pretty happy too if someone else kept my house and clothes clean, kept the fridge full, cared for meals and made sure the bills were paid while I came home from work and contributed nothing at all.

Because the women facilitate almost all facets of the work of maintaining a healthy relationship and family and parenting, etc. I asked my former husband what he hoped he had taught our children, what knowledge did he impart that he hoped would carry them forward into adulthood. He was like huh? We had a not so funny joke about how he thought things got done in our home and it was a “effing” fairy. I was the fairy.
