Forests ran for thousands of kilometres without a break, rain came down clean on open farmland, and a person could pick a direction and walk toward a horizon with nothing built across it. They were the last generation to find any of it ordinary. The end came as a run of hard years, the climate slipping one season at a time. What the weather thinned, the powerful began to administer. When there stops being enough, someone decides who drinks first, and counting became control. The first lists were drawn, the queues formed, the blocs hardened, and for twenty years they fought in the dark while the wild world burned and almost no one watched. Then the war came everywhere at once. They turned all their bright machinery, the industry and the networks and the platforms in orbit, into weapons and aimed it at each other. Cities that had stood a thousand years emptied in a week. The forests went in a week of firestorms. And when there was almost nothing left to win, they opened the arsenals and unmade whole regions in hours. It ended in total destruction. The surface was a graveyard of the young sent to die and the ordinary never asked, the sky gone brown, the rain turned to acid, the lights going out in patches. But the people who had led the world into the war were not among its dead. They had stopped believing in victory years before, and while the young were marched out to die, they had been digging. When the sky finally darkened they sealed into deep bunkers stocked for lifetimes, checked against lists drawn up years before, and locked the doors on everyone else.
