a big part of it is definitely people getting their information from people using ai to just mean gen ai instead of what it actually means being all ai.

I think we should make the AI data centers create their own power using solar, wind and batteries to either fully power or help offset their incredibly high power consumption. As for the water, I've heard they use a lot for cooling, and that it somehow gets polluted. If they could return it to it's source, clean but warmer, it may not be so bad. I think we just need to find a solution because you are right, they are not going away.

The path with AI should be on ethical use and unethical use, and ways to reduce the impact. Cognitive augmentation is a positive. It can help overcome certain impairments as well as accelerate learning. Knowing the difference is important.

in all fairness, the stuff about AI ruining the environment is nothing but social media fear mongering. we use a tiny fraction of water on datacenters (not just AI) compared to agriculture and other food production.
