Did you know that the prostate tends to grow with age? This is something that happens to most men, and although it is benign, it can seriously affect their quality of life. The prostate surrounds the urethra, which is the tube through which urine exits. When it grows, it can compress it and make urination difficult. The result? Weak stream, feeling of not completely emptying the bladder, the urge to urinate several times at night, urinary urgency, urinating in two bursts or with dribbling at the end. Initially, urologists usually prescribe medications such as alpha blockers, which relax the prostate, and hormone inhibitors, which help reduce its size (although they take between four and six months to take effect). But when symptoms persist, minimally invasive surgical procedures through the urethra are considered. These include: Transurethral Resection (TUR), green light laser, prostatic enucleation with HoLEP, Aquablation (pressurized water jet), Urolift (anchors that open the canal). If the prostate is very large (more than 100 g), the most effective option is robotic surgery. In this case, the contents of the prostate are removed, reproducing the open technique, but with fewer complications and a lower retreatment rate. (I described this technique about 13 years ago, and I am proud that it is a worldwide standard for addressing this condition.)
