I always took the "you're making me mad" as a double entendre. Like he was mad angry, but I believe he also started to have issues with his mental stability right around/after the revolutionary war.

It works because not only is the role and Jonathan amazing, but because the tone of the songs is entirely different then the rest of the show so far. It’s like hearing a huge ballad on a rock and roll album. Shocking and memorable.
