The Johor-Singapore RTS Link: The high-speed rail project connecting Singapore and Kuala Lumpur was once designed to drastically cut travel time between the two capitals. However, it was officially terminated in 2021 due to disagreements over operating frameworks and budget costs, with Malaysia paying the stipulated compensation fee. After the long-distance high-speed rail plan was shelved, Singapore and Malaysia shifted their focus to the busiest Johor Strait checkpoint and approved the Johor-Singapore RTS Link to address the urgent demand for short-distance cross-border commutes. At present, construction of the RTS is well underway, with over 90% of the works completed. Trains are undergoing regular trial runs, and the line is scheduled to open in January 2027. The ride from Woodlands North Station in Singapore to Johor Bahru will take merely five minutes, with integrated immigration clearance, which will greatly ease chronic congestion at the Johor-Singapore Causeway. This rail link will bring remarkable economic benefits.
