One of the reasons is because Penelope had allies and ran the kingdom without trouble. Telemachus had NO allies, therefore the kingdom would eventually fall

He was a literal child when the suitors showed up. And signs or signals that Telemachus was learned to take over would have resulted in his immediate death. As long as he is “unready” he is safe, however that all goes out the window the minute Penelope marries. The married suitor would need to kill him to assure his own future children’s line of succession.

Im more concerned about the HORRIBLE troy guards….not because they get merc’ed by the horse hiders….but literally the whole army walked right up to the gate and just stood there waiting for it to open and not ONE wall guard noticed them

I get it but also these guys were power hungry and observing them in their home and saw him as a little boy so they didn’t perceive him as much of a threat, Penelope in the beginning was probably banking on that to make sure her son won’t get taken out. She was holding out for her husband, by the time her son was fully grown it was a lil late and yea that’s screwed but in her mind she was protecting her son and her husbands kingdom at the same time. And movie Teley I’m ngl would not have been cautious if he did start learning to rule or had allies as proven by him asking his mom to crown him and step down. He was jumping the gun despite him knowing he didn’t have the skills or power to be king. Also she assumed that at the end of the war her husband would be back and her husband would be the one to teach him like he was supposed to, by the time it was obvious he wasn’t coming back the suitors were there pressuring her to marry so they can take the kingdom and it was known that it wasn’t her son running things, it gave him cover. ALSO ITHICA WAS SO FUCKIBG CLOSE WHY WOULD SHE ASSUME HER HUSBAND WOULD TAKE AN ADDITIONAL 9 YEARS!!! It should have taken him 2 weeks max, it’s why in the myth, his crew not listening to him and opening the windbag was so devastating becuz he could see the shore of his kingdom, they were so fucking close and they pushed them so far away from home and then they proceeded to act as if it was his fault and didn’t listen to him further so it added more obstacles and further angered the gods until only he made it back.

As messed up as it is, she was never "on the throne". Sure she probably made decisions and kept the peace. But one can assume that people only listened to her under the expectation that Odysseus would return. The more time passed, the less likely that became, and the more people stopped taking her seriously. So she was never "on the throne" as in actively being in charge. Realistically she had no idea how to raise and prepare him to lead without still leaning on Odysseus.

So odd to me, a solution is presenting itself, how about you prepare your son, odysseys’s son, the heir, to rule and form alliances, and recruit friends, and have him start acting like a king. Instead of just playing host, hiding, and whining for 20 years

Basically if he was viewed as a serious contender to the throne, the suitors would've moved in to kill him sooner. Part of the reason why they moved the way they did when he left to speak with Menalous bc they saw it as him seeking allies

The only person who is smarter than Odysseus is Penelope. There’s only so much a woman in her position could have done for Telemachus. The suitors are openly talking about their plots in her home. It wasn’t safe to rise Telemachus up. Also she genuinely was holding out hope he’d return

In one of the version of the Book and i think it was also in 1 movie. Odyssues’ Mother also called her out for this (during the time it was after Troy and every king has already went home) But Penelope dosen’t want to because she believed it would be like accepting that her husband is dead.

the second telemachus started stepping up, making moves, doing anything other than hosting, the suitors made plans to kill him. making him someone difficult and unnecessary to target was on purpose. he was only safe when he was home and not taking any action. that couldn't last forever but if he had left any earlier their plans to kill him would have worked bc he happened to wait until exactly when Odysseus came back.

Bc in Ancient Greece the boy is raised by his mom till he’s 7 and then by his dad, but Telemachus’s dad was away and that’s why he was unprepared for being a king and fighting, I actually liked this detail

Penelope never wavered in her belief that Odysseus was coming back. I feel like preparing her son to take his place before his return would be facing the idea that he had died in the war, which she refused to believe. Additionally, Telemachus was safe from the suitors as long as he wasn’t an immediate threat to their paths to the throne. The second he started making moves of any kind, they went in to kill him. With her son and husband gone, Penelope would have lost everyone and would also have nothing standing between her and the suitors

technically bc u become a king sort of not bc u learn it but u must have the strength for it too. most greek kings mentioned in the iliad or the odyssey have their physical strength highlighted more often than their wits. even with odysseus tho he was really smart in the odyssey his strength is also emphasised. telemachus could have all the wits and knowledge but what he lacks is strength which is apparent in how the suitors could quickly beat him down in the earlier scenes

It’s because in the beginning she held onto the hope that Odysseus would return. So she saw no reason to crown Telemachus, since she was under the expectation the ACTUAL king would return. Then as more time pasted and it became less likely he would THATS when the suitors made their move, and it was already too late to put Telemachus in the throne. (without the suitors fighting against it ofc)

he wasn't "ready" because culturally he was still considered in his minority. he would have to wait a few years still to be king and there may not have been a regent system where he would be crowned but have his rule run through a designated adult. as a boy and male heir he was going to be at the mercy of any man who would take over that household.

1- the adult age in Ancient Greece was around 20. thats when boys and girls sometimes go to military school and train for ruling or fighting 2- Telemachus did train, but he cant take on all the suitors by himself because ... 3- the law of Xenia was very firm and strict. he cannot harm any suitor ..thats why the no les of Ithaca coukdnt do anything and.. 4- that's why the suitors wanted to off him before he turned adult and claim the throne

He couldn’t have taken the throne if she did prepare him and Odysseus never came back. It would’ve been insufficient preparation. Telemachus needs a man or a dad, an epic or military experience to be seen as adequate to succeed his father. He’d additionally need political backing and council approval to take the throne. None of which be had. It’s why he has to venture out and why Athena mentors him. Even if Penelope prepared him, the suitors outnumber her and Telemachus, they would’ve just killed him.
