Respectfully, I think this is a collection of some bad advice. I understand it’s all opinion and you’re working with frontier models. However I think the demand for swe will increase, if ai becomes more capable we will try to solve more with it. I will say swe will become more forward facing and maybe we have the pm and swe roles merge… but ultimately the demand for software will increase and this will increase swe demand. I think coding will be foundational skills not so much the everyday skill, but still essential to being a good engineer. I do agree on system design.

You seem to discount the value of implementing these “easy” solutions by hand in favor of using an AI companion. There is absolutely something to be gaining by implementing everything by hand, understanding why we have the “out of the box” solutions we have, and knowing when to branch from those to implement a novel, unique solution to a problem. AI in its current state can give a baseline solution, engineers need to know what to use and when and absolutely cannot depend on AI to

Very unrelated, but what’s your coding flow? Do you mainly use one model and one session, or something like Fable 5 for planning, Opus 4.8 for execution, and Sol to review?

Do you have advice on how to be better at decision making and elevating yourself to more of a staff level? I’m up for promo for senior and able to ship large scoped projects well, but I don’t think I have the taste and decision making to understand how the organization develops next projects and what the next big project would be

Can I ask what resources you used for practicing those more abstract theoretical problems? Seems like leetcode is on the way out (besides interview prep)

As a member of the general public w no college degree is it possible to work towards taking the CCA-F cert exam or a way to get hired by a company that will give access to the exam? If not are there any other cert similar to it?

In my team, databricks and Genie (claude wrapper) is already good enough to cease hiring devs in perpetuity, when 5-10 years ago we’d probably need a couple. I feel grateful every day that I fell into a niche, operational (read: no training corpus) career but still get the upside of AI
