@lifeuncutpodcast: "Calling this discrimination devalues what discrimination in the workforce actually is." Dish's extra 2 weeks paid leave for parents has the internet split: thought leadership or unfair on the child-free?

who picks up the slack when someone is on leave? my guess is the childless staff member gets the double whammy (getting less entitlements and working harder)

If the leave provisions aren’t equitable across the board it puts staff without children or with other caring responsibilities at a disadvantage. I am about to take time off work to care for my mother. I shouldn’t be less valued because my caring responsibilities are for someone at the other end of the age spectrum.

Discrimination is definitely the wrong word. I agree that it should be caregivers leave and should be available to everyone if a business wishes to do it.

I’m 45 and childless, not by choice and appreciate now using my personal leave to take my sister to chemo every week. I don’t agree parents should get additional leave.

I think why many people may take offence to it is that it often feels like parents get priority in other ways. Often have to change hours etc to navigate child care and sick kids (and you can be as supportive as you can in a workplace but it doesn’t change that as a coworker it can be a frustrating thing to witness) and you often see and feel they get priority for leave - Christmas because of the kids, school holidays, extra days over public holidays. Other people have families, other people have things going on in their lives but sometimes it feels like because that reason isn’t ‘kids’ that our needs aren’t taken seriously or considered.

But they could 100% be spending those extra 2 weeks in Europe with their family?

If I can't leave when someone else is off, and they get extra time to take off, it limits when I can then chose to take my leave. Basically I can take leave when the parents tell me I can

No one understands unless you are a parent. I hate to be that person. Being a parent especially a first time parent it’s not just about you navigating motherhood or fatherhood, your whole life and world changes and is put on pause while your whole body changes for the second/ third tile depending how you see it. I think businesses need to value their mums in many ways. That’s how mums will always come back to the work space. But I agree there needs to be a little bit of change around carers leave days. But that’s up to interpretation and can become abit of a grey area and a way for employees to get more days off than they need

I find this very interesting people are complaining it’s unfair or discriminatory but I think we need to think about the bigger picture. Supporting people and in particular mums in the workplace lower costs of hiring and training, support culture, helps with team building, allows job loads to be managed, so others aren’t forced to “pick up the slack” plus when a companies invests in their people, staff want to give their best which again increases productivity etc etc. Less parents on Centrelink, relying on government support, and increases personal confidence, happiness and mental health. Yes we should look at carers leave too. But can’t we take this as a win that a biz has moved towards supporting its staff to build healthy communities and change the way we see leave entitlements

if they want to give an extra 2 weeks leave you give it to everyone! Not just parents. the policy is not incredible. Its tone deaf.

100% it should simply be extra caregiver leave. Child raising is not the only type of care being provided in society and all should be valued

In a gen where grandparents are still working and there are less people to be in the village I think it should apply to more than just parents. I agree the leave is not to have holidays but it does allow space for caregiving that others cannot access even when they are at times depended upon. Many people access their AL to support their families and their small children. It is discriminatory and people WO kids will financially be worse off than those that have children for having similar needs. Coincided with burnout that we all experience in the workplace and reducing AL due to being a support for families with children.

So where there are 2 parents, both get carers leave isn’t that enough? Dad or other mother can use their leave as well, why do mothers need more?

We often hear that unequal treatment is justified to close a proven gap. What is the proven gap here? Parents receive an additional employment benefit, while their colleagues are often expected to absorb the workload during leave and ongoing childcare absences. Why isn't the impact on those employees part of the fairness equation?
