OSOGO WINYO: Osogo Winyo is a Kenyan ohangla musician. His real name is John Okinyi. Some sources list him as Walter Opiyo, so there are conflicting accounts of his birth name. He’s nicknamed “the singing weaver bird”. Early life & name origin: - Born in Migori and grew up in the Luo community of western Kenya . He was born on April 12, 1981. - Started playing music in primary school in Migori. - His first band was 'Nyarongi Panga Orutu System' where he sang and drummed. - The name “Osogo” came from his dad’s nickname. Osogo is a bird that builds its nest when maize is in plenty. Fans later gave him the surname ‘Winyo’ and he adopted both. Move to Nairobi & early hustle: - Couldn’t pay Form 4 school fees due to financial constraints then Moved to Kayole, Nairobi to do jua kali work. - Kept playing music while doing odd jobs. He says: “I didn't prepare to be a musician, it just happened. I wasn't trained how to play drums, how to play the mouth organ or how to sing, I just found myself playing music. On stage I develop my songs spontaneously”. Music career: - 2002 he Recorded first album Migingo Orutu System. - Formed his band 'Osogo Winyo and the Ohangla Boys'. - In 2005 With help from Omondi Pantha, recorded album _Hummer_ in Mombasa. - In 2008 , Princess July managed recording for Ageng'o in Nairobi. Due to financial conflict with Princess July, he moved on under his own label and Later released Wan Ji Ariyo, Nyar Gombe in 2007 is also listed as his debut album in some sources. STYLE OF MUSIC: Blends traditional Luo folk music with contemporary sounds. Plays nyatiti, guitar, drums, and mouth organ. - Based in Kisumu and known for electrifying live shows.
