You Won’t Believe What We Found On The Beach! 🤯 Most people see seaweed and weird blobs on the beach. I see clues to an entire ocean ecosystem. Today we found three awesome beach discoveries. First, this is a bull kelp bulb, also called a pneumatocyst. It’s a gas-filled float that lifts the kelp toward sunlight so it can photosynthesize. Without it, the kelp would struggle to reach the light it needs. Next is a clear ghost shrimp. Its nearly transparent body helps it blend into its surroundings, making it much harder for predators to spot. These tiny crustaceans help recycle nutrients by feeding on algae, detritus, and other organic matter. And finally, a comb jelly. Even though it looks like a jellyfish, it isn’t one. Comb jellies belong to their own group of animals called ctenophores. Instead of stinging tentacles, they use sticky cells to capture tiny prey, and the rows of tiny cilia they use for swimming create shimmering rainbow colors in the light.
