@gamer_lafan: The King of Fighters XI marked the end of the yearly release format that had continued through KOF 2003, bringing the series back to numbered titles. I never got the chance to play it in arcades back then, and only experienced it later after adding the Atomiswave arcade board to my collection. Compared to the Neo Geo MVS, the Atomiswave offered a noticeable upgrade in graphics, visual effects, and sound. However, I heard that the limited ROM capacity forced the developers to compress a lot of the game’s data, which may explain the noticeably long loading times. That was probably the game’s biggest drawback. With the annual release schedule gone, the developers finally had more time to polish the game, resulting in a more refined experience that was fairly well received by fans. It was also the last King of Fighters released on the Atomiswave hardware, with its successor, The King of Fighters XII, moving to the Taito Type X arcade system.
