The second Sirius got news the Voldemort was heading for the Potters, he bolted. He raced for their house in Godric’s Hollow, hoping beyond hope that he’d somehow make it there in time. Just as he turned the corner, he saw a flash of green pour from the house, along with the ear shattering scream that he knows is Lily’s. He drops his motorbike in the yard, not even giving it time to fall before he sprints inside. The house is oddly silent now, he can’t help but feel a bit of relief. That’s before he runs up the stairs, tripping and falling ontop of a body he recognizes as much as his own, the warmth of James Potter fading fast beneath him. He slowly opens his eyes, staring down at the empty face of his best friend. He hears Harry sobbing in his crib just up the stairs, and it takes everything in him to pull away from James, leaving his brother crumpled on the stairs. He rushes for Harry, reaching his room to find a lifeless figure just beside his crib, red hair spilling out everywhere. Lily’s gone. His first thought is of how devastated James will be, then he remembers. He slowly picks Harry up, the toddler screaming and reaching down for the body of his mum. Sirius kneels down, letting Harry grab at her face. “There you go, pup. Say bye to mummy.” He whispers, wiping at his eyes as a tear spills out. He can cry later with Remus. They can work it all out, when Harry’s fast asleep. And Peter can- Peter. How had Voldemort known where the Potters were? Peter was the only one who knew, he hadn’t seen the boy in days. There’s footsteps outside, and he rushes to the window, leaving Harry wailing next to Lily. Outside a dark cloaked figure is creeping down the side street, he immediatly recognizes the form of Peter Pettigrew. Traitor. That’s what is it. How is Harry alive? He doesn’t know. How are his best friends dead? He does know. But what he does know is Peter fucking Pettigrew ratted them out. He rushes back over to Harry, who immediately begins to fuss, scooping him up and gently placing him in the crib. “I know, pup, I know. I’ll be back soon.” He sprints down the stairs, staring longingly at James for a long second before running outside. The figure turns quickly, the cloak slipping from near their face, revealing the terrified eyes of Peter. “They trusted you!” Sirius screams it, even though there’s muggle children all around trick-or-treating. He hadn’t even noticed them in his hurry over. He pulls out his wand, not caring for any laws or rules with muggles and magic. This is far more important. He aims it at Peter, muttering every spell he can think of as he charges towards him, hitting several muggles caught in the crossfire. Peter’s wand is out in a half second, and a bright flash of blinding white light drowns out the street, sending Sirius flying back and nearly knocking him out as his head hits stone. He takes only a minute to come back around, though his vision is blurry and he can’t feel his legs. All he knows is Peter isn’t there, and he can’t feel see a dozen muggles laying all down the street, unconscious or dead or somewhere in between. He’s being hauled up by somebody, he can’t quite tell who yet. He’s wishing, stupidly, that it’s James or Lily, that somehow they’re alive. Maybe even Remus, just so he can finally have someone who gets it. But he doesn’t recognize the touch, and it lacks any warmth his best friends would have. “Sirius Black,” it’s a strong voice, one of a man he doesn’t know.
