Laughing Fool (c. 1500) By Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen 📍 Davis Museum at Wellesley College Some paintings look simple until you realize they are asking a harder question. Laughing Fool looks like a joke about a ridiculous man. He wears a yellow jester’s hood, donkey ears rise from his cap, and he grins directly at us while holding a pair of spectacles. But the meaning changes when we notice his eye. He is not simply covering his face. He is looking through the gaps between his fingers. He wants to see, but only partly. That is the real meaning of the painting. The fool is not blind. He is selectively blind. The spectacles make the joke sharper. He has the tool for clearer vision, but he does not use it. Instead, he chooses a broken view. That is why this painting still feels modern. Not knowing the truth is one thing. Refusing to see it is something else. The fool isn’t hiding from the truth.
