Before becoming president, Idi Amin served the British colonial government directly through his career in the military, and maintained brief diplomatic ties with Britain early in his regime: Served in the British Colonial Military: Enlisted in the King's African Rifles (KAR) in 1946, serving the British Empire for over 15 years. Fought in Colonial Campaigns: Deployed to Kenya during the 1950s to suppress the Mau Mau Uprising against British rule. Guarded British Border Interests: Led military platoons to suppress cattle raiding and border unrest along the Uganda-Kenya border. Earned Top Colonial Ranks: Rose to the rank of Effendi (Warrant Officer) and became one of only two Ugandans commissioned as officers by the British before independence. Returned the Royal Remains: Arranged the repatriation of Kabaka Mutesa II's body from London to Uganda in 1971, resolving a sensitive diplomatic issue with the UK. Aligned with British Cold War Strategy: Initially protected British commercial and geopolitical interests against left-wing policies in East Africa upon taking power in 1971.
