More than 1,000 years ago, Al-Biruni calculated the Earth’s size using mathematics and a mountain near Nandana in present-day Pakistan. Instead of traveling around the world, he first worked out the mountain’s height by measuring angles from two points on the plain below. Then he climbed to the top and measured how far the horizon dipped below eye level. Using that tiny angle and the mountain’s height, he calculated the Earth’s radius—and from that, its full diameter.
