One of the most mature realizations you can have is understanding that love isn’t just about finding the right person: it’s also about becoming the version of yourself that has the capacity to love well. Sometimes, the most loving decision isn’t starting a relationship. It’s admitting you don’t have the emotional, financial, or mental bandwidth to build one right now.
We often celebrate people who “do it all,” but life doesn’t really work that way. Every “yes” is also a “no” to something else. Building a career, healing from past experiences, paying off debt, raising children, starting a business, going back to school: these things require enormous amounts of attention and energy. Pretending you have unlimited capacity doesn’t make you stronger. It usually just makes you exhausted.
There’s a difference between protecting your peace and avoiding intimacy. One is rooted in wisdom; the other is rooted in fear. The challenge is being honest enough to know which one you’re doing. If you’re investing in yourself because you’re building a stronger foundation for the life you want, that’s growth. If you’re using self-improvement to indefinitely avoid vulnerability, that’s a different conversation. The motive matters just as much as the decision.
Ironically, people who intentionally step away from dating for a season often have healthier relationships later because they stop looking for someone to rescue them from the life they haven’t built yet. They enter relationships wanting to share a life instead of asking someone else to create one for them. That’s a completely different starting point.
The phrase: “before I have the capacity to pour into someone else.” Capacity isn’t about how much love you have. It’s about how much margin you have. You can deeply care about someone and still not have the emotional availability to consistently show up for them. Love without capacity often turns into guilt, resentment, or burnout; not because the feelings aren’t real, but because the resources aren’t there.
Life moves in seasons. Some seasons are for building. Some are for healing. Some are for serving and some are for partnership.
