a lot was burned in the fire but it wasn't 90% of human history. about 90% of human history was never even recorded in the first place because we weren't socializing for hundreds of thousands of years. We weren't worried about recording history we were too busy surviving and living day by day.

Honestly, that whole "90% of history went up in smoke at Alexandria" thing is just a massive myth. It makes for a tragic movie plot, but the reality was way more boring. It didn't burn down in one big dramatic inferno, it just slowly fell apart over centuries because of budget cuts and general neglect. Plus, Alexandria wasn't the ancient world's only backup drive. Places like Rome and Athens had huge libraries too, so the really important science and philosophy survived elsewhere. The real bummer wasn't that human progress got reset, but just that we lost a ton of unique poetry, plays, and personal stories. That was the kind of stuff that actually showed what everyday life felt like back then.

For some reason, it would be interesting if time travelers went and burned it down hense why modern existence is the way it is.

The library consisted of mostly copied scrolls. Almost no knowledge was lost with it burning. Now, the fall of rome. We lost A LOT of knowledge then

We lost far more history when the church became the historians, the church was the institution that was preserving rotting manuscripts. So the church was choosing which historic manuscripts to save & which to preserve. Obviously this led to bias issues & we’ve lost so much information about past religions.

that's not true. they had many copies of nearly everything in different places. the importance of the library of alexandria is incredibly overestimated

If we’re being realistically here, most of our history prob didn’t exist bc we have no solid proof that a certain time period existed, all we have is “documents”

actually no offense here but this is a very popular myth very little irreplaceable history was lost and the library wasn't even lost to a single burning it mostly expired from neglect from events like Julius Ceasars defense in Alexandria and his orders to set the harbor on fire which said fire spread to a nearby warehouse and destroying 40 thousand scrolls but the library survived another example is emperor Aurelian in the 270s where the main building was destroyed attempting to capture Alexandria from queen Zenobia religious riots in 391 also caused damage and the final decline was because there was no funding for the library nor interest plus Alexandria already fell from its peak by the time Arabs came in 642 the library was gone for centuries the library acquired books by seizing them from ships entering the port making a copy keeping the original and giving the copy back this meant almost every text in Alexandria already existed somewhere else plus other major libraries like in Rome Athens roses Antioch and pergamum (which held around 200,000 scrolls) if a text was important collectors and institutions owned copies while the 90% myth only really works for Greek and Roman literature but this wasn't really from a fire and nearly all of them was copied and if they were destroyed it was from papyrus shelf life and the byzantines and arabs deciding to copy shifting toward theology eventually after the western Roman empire collapsed in 476 Greek died in western Europe so if something wasn't translated people didn't really care and just left it to rot
