The overall pattern is still clear: * Throughout history, men committed most warfare and large-scale violence, primarily because they overwhelmingly held positions as kings, generals, tribal leaders, and soldiers. * When women acquired comparable political and military power, many behaved similarly to male rulers—some governed peacefully, while others waged wars, ordered executions, or suppressed opponents. * Modern research generally finds that the opportunity and incentives associated with power are major drivers of political violence, rather than sex alone. So it would be inaccurate to say that women have never been responsible for conquest or cruelty. It would also be inaccurate to suggest that women have historically contributed equally to warfare, because access to military and political power was very unequal across most societies. The historical record supports both points.
