Everything wrong with our education system - we waste so many good people because we exclude them through money / can’t afford to live there. Can’t afford to buy the damn uniform!!! How many kids have we wasted for such trivial reasons?

I’ve never resonated so much, I wasted my opportunity of private school because I was the poorest there. Had to be the coolest and do crazy stuff smoking & drinking & getting into clubs. I wish I couldn’t have given a shit 🫤

I wish I knew this side of John Major when he was PM. I’m not a lover of the Conservatives but I didn’t mind Major too much. I grew up poor due to an alcoholic step father and I, like John understand how poverty can really hinder ones education activities. Poverty made me an extremely shy person and in my later teens I compensated this shyness with a lot craziness that led me to go to Borstal. Every kid should have every chance to excel, sadly this is still not the case. Thanks for sharing John and Giles, these posts are really good.

Reminds me of my secondary school in 1968.Having to describe how to use stereo and hi.fi when we didn't even have telephone or tv in english lesson.But hard work paid off and made me more charitably towards less well off people.
