Honestly, I love that she could give an answer, but she knows other people in those fields to lift up who have stronger expertise. She could have said I don’t know and ended it there or she could’ve made up what her best guess could’ve been.

Also wanted to pop in and add to the discussion: depending on how long it had been since her initial date of transplant, will determine how many of the “donor” cells are being produced vs how many of her “self” cells are still in circulation. We can test to see how ENGRAFTED the transplant is. But everyone has to remember that a bone marrow transplant is usually done to treat blood cancers or other types of blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia. So those will be the only cell lines affected. In blood banking we see lots of transplant recipients have a changed blood type due to the bone marrow donors blood type being different from the recipients initial typing. It’s pretty fascinating watching the bone marrow become more engrafted and their blood type go from a strange mixed field to a solid front type totally different from their old one! I think a hematology/oncology doctor would be the best person to answer this type of question!

Sooo this is how science gets started. We ask questions, makes hypothesis and then they have to do experiments and studies, and then observations and conclusions. Scientific method, baby! Anyways, looks like we’re on step 1. And the thing about science is like we’re always learning more and that changes what we knew. Anyways. Science is cool AF. Do it for science.
