Follow @the.kingdom.of.Belgium Belgium is currently dealing with its largest wildfire on record, and it is burning through the High Fens in eastern Belgium near the German border. The fire began on Friday and has already burned around 3,000 hectares, more than twice the size of Belgium’s previous record wildfire in the same region in 2011. Hundreds of residents have been evacuated, while more than 250 emergency personnel are fighting the blaze. Belgium is also receiving help from Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and other European countries, including firefighting aircraft and helicopters. The High Fens’ dry peatlands and difficult terrain are making the fire particularly difficult to contain, and the flames have been moving toward the German border. Fortunately, no homes had been affected as of Sunday, although smoke remains a major concern. This is an absolutely massive event for Belgium, especially because the High Fens is one of the country’s most important natural areas.
