This intricate, fern-like branching allows an enormous amount of neural tissue to be packed into a relatively small space. Beneath the surface, the cerebellum is organized into distinct layers: an outer molecular layer, a layer of Purkinje cells, and an inner granular layer. Purkinje cells are some of the most elaborate neurons in the entire human body, each one can form tens of thousands of connections with other neurons, allowing for the split-second coordination needed for smooth, precise movement. Despite making up only about 10% of the brain's total volume, the cerebellum contains more than half of all the neurons in your entire brain.
