I was born into the Jehovah's Witnesses and I remember thinking I must be stupid. I had so many questions and couldn't find any answers in the Bible so I thought there was something wrong with me. The indoctrination I went through had me questioning my own sanity.

This seems more like a denomination problem then. While a good large chunk of Christianity is very indoctrinate-y, not all of denominations are like that.

I went to a pentacostal church whe I was in the foster system as a kid. There were preschoolers holding their hands up, eyes closed just imitating their parents. One kid tried to speak in tongues it was crazy. Now I'm an athiest

A slight revision on your definition of indoctrination: the process of teaching an individual or group *to accept* a set of beliefs without questioning them. It’s the acceptance without question that can become damaging, and such processes don’t have to take place entirely consciously.

I wish I can go back to church days and ask them to give at least 5 historical examples of the church causing massive harm in the world.Like the Inquisitions or missionary work.Which still happens today.To hear their response.

My parents sent me to Sunday school, but they asked what I learned, and then presented contradictory passages and we discussed it. They felt it was important to learn what was in the Bible…but to think critically about it…just like all of my education.

I remember as a child when I couldn't understand something and I pushed back on religion my dad always said that the answers were in the Bible. It was harmful to us as children and it didn't encourage critical thinking or any healthy thoughts or growth. I remember lots of shame. 😒

i feel this so much. my family has given me sooo much 💩 for allowing my kids to find their own path and not raising them in the church. my belief is that ones spiritual path is theirs to make and that when a spiritual belief is forced then it becomes poisoned in a way because their not choosing it so their hearts/soul can't fully embrace it.

what indoctrination is, is teaching people what to think. the opposite of indoctrination is teaching people how to think, and giving them enough data to make an educated decision on what to think
