That local rule is not adopted by many courses because it causes confusion with members when they are playing in a competition or putting scores in for handicaps where it cannot be used. We would never adopt it at our club and I don’t know of any in our area who have adopted. It’s never used in any clubs I play “open” competitions in and that covers the whole of the North of England

I think most folk do this. Although I think it’s a shanner of a rule because pros have spotters and alway find their ball. Us mere mortals get penalised more. Should bin off provisional and be third shot from where ball crossed fairway imo if lost

Mulligan!! we ain't playing on tour, it's not that serious take a Malli but limit the amount you have per 18 holes (usually 3). If you don't take a mulli just drop a ball anywhere where you think it might've went OB (because who knows) then add +1 penalty.

I was under the impression you were allowed to take your distance for how far your shot went, not where it crossed the OB boundary. Just like you more or less drop where you enter a lateral hazard, you drop according to your best judgment for your distance.

So if you shank it off the tee, it goes out of bounds 100 yards up, you’d still be better off hitting a provisional. You’re going to be playing 4th shot from fairway either way. May as well try and hit a good provisional than playing 80 yards from the tee.

Wish there was something to do about balls that clearly don’t go OB but don’t get found. Especially when it’s course condition related. Nothing worse than piercing a fairway and having a ball go New York Mets September
