Unfortunately that perspective is lazy and ignores one of the greatest beauties of art, in that each individual can glean something unique from a single work. It is in fact that deep, regardless of its intention.

Yo bingus just because they added the symbols for aesthetics doesn’t mean the symbols themselves aren’t imbued with meaning that is significantly related to the story and has significant meaning, Eva isn’t a religious show but that doesn’t mean the religious symbols don’t have meaning

"It's not that deep" is always a lie in any context. If meaning can be derived, meaning is there regardless of the intent of the creator of the art. The art itself takes on a life of its own.

This is kind of reductive. Of course the initial decision to have Christian imagery was aesthetic but that shouldn’t discount the use of the imagery in more thematic ways. This is probably the worst half truth in the Eva fandom because it discourages deeper analysis.

Comment section is proof that critical thinking is dead. Whether the artist meant for it or not is irrelevant when it’s our interpretations of that art that we cherish

This is misleading. The creators of the show said the symbols had meaning, but because they were western symbols, they were able to use them without invoking the same religious ideas as if they used eastern religious symbols.

"the curtains are blue" ahh analysis
authorial intent is secondary. part of media literacy is the ability to interpret symbols used in media to gain new meaning. it isn't limited in any way to what the creator intended.

Reader interpretation is just as valuable as authorial intent, one does not supersede the other

this is misinformation that has been on the internet for ages. many of these statements come from people other than anno. Anno said he was comfortable using Christian imagery because he wasn’t christian and so it was therefore less ‘scary’ for him to use.

As my English teacher always said in high school, sometimes the curtain is just blue. Sometimes there’s no deeper meaning

You clearly haven't watched the series if you think the judeo christian imagery used was "just to look cool"
