I’m 25, and have been fostering a 17 year old for the past year. Teenagers are definitely my favorite to foster. Being closer in age helps with understanding especially when you’ve been in FC, I’ve never had a problem with “being a friend and not a parent”. Set rules, and boundaries immediately, stick to them, you’ll be fine!

I wouldnt risk it personally unless you know them and their situation. Housing foster children is one thing but a teen with resentment and anger issues could spell trouble for you.

I absolutely understand where you're coming from but honestly I'd wait a few years to experience life yourself. You're still young and need a bit of time alone to really develop and explore, then definitely revisit the idea maybe at 24ish. it's not selfish at all to take that time for yourself and you could always find other ways to help out part-time in the meantime

I have a 17yro as a 22yro, I knew them before, but its way harder then being older. the school refuses to dismiss her without me walking in with papers every time because her teacher is convinced im "one of her little friends"

I think this is the definition of putting back into the world I think this is incredibly sweet and if you want to do it, do it. And thank you for even considering. this is so selfless of you.

try the big brother program first, it'll help you get started since they work directly with cps in some states

As someone who was a young foster parent, take a little more time to grow within yourself. Sometimes it’s harder for older teens to see you as a safe adult if you’re close in age. It also gives you time to become more within yourself. 21 is grown but still young. Take a little time and revisit when you’re a little older, you got this💕

girl ignore these comments just go for it. everything in life is a learning curve and you don’t know until you try, not all kids are the same though.

Hey as someone who is 19 and was in the system for almost 10 years, I think it’s an amazing idea. Teens are so overlooked and honestly having someone in my corner would have made all the difference.

I was sixteen and my foster mum was twenty-six or twenty-five, when she fostered me. I didn’t necessarily see her as my “friend” and definitely more as a guardian figure🫶 I was also her first foster kid and she was also a former foster kid!
