Joseph Campbell talks a lot about this concept in The Power of Myth! He says that because people from Abrahamic faiths believe that heaven is a separate realm from earth, they don’t treat the natural world with as much reverence as people from, say, animist belief systems, who believe that everything in the natural world is has a soul, and that the spiritual world is here on earth.

I’ve heard plenty of religious people flat out say the bible gives them dominion over earth and the animals so they can do what they want. They also think animals don’t have souls so they are less worthy than humans. It’s honestly enraging

“Nature isn’t good or bad” it’s neutral. What’s “good” for one animal is “bad” for another. Depends whose lense you’re looking at it through. Food for one animal is death for another.

That opening sentence!!! Disconnection from nature and believing that one is above nature, and not the SAME as nature, is where the patriarchy / capitalism/ money/ hatred/ homophobia/ misogyny /transphobia, and soo much more, come from! Connecting back with nature, and not extracting from it with no regard for balance , is the complexity humans are starting to finally remember 🥰

As far as I found out: The first 300 years of Christianity stood in opposition to the Roman Empire - which had fostered social inequality - whereas Christianity offered practical care, support, and community to marginalized groups. That was, until the Romans repurposed Christianity as an instrument of power to control the masses. Correct me if I’m wrong. 🫶

I know this is super basic to you, but when I took my bachelors in social anthropology, and in year 2 read the Max Weber article (I forget what it's called) about the interconnection between protestantism and capitalism, that blew my mind and made me forever see the world differently.

I just listened to this three times just so I could keep thinking about this! It reminds me of Carolyn Merchant’s book - Death of Nature and the conquering of virgin women and virgin wilderness to be the same belief. I would LOVE book recommendations and more videos about these intersecting topics! You’re very eloquent and I appreicate you sharing this

Western colonialism is also hugely based around the idea to "tame" anything they consider(ed) "wild", which not only relates back to the whole "keeping out nature" thing of the "civilized" world, but also explains a lot of stigmata against anything that appears "uncivilized" from a fixed stereotypical/binary coded world view. The majority of the early colonialistic endeavors were all based on that very idea from Genesis you are talking about. I did an academic photography project about gardens where I talk about that exact thing with women and nature as well, so awesome to hear people talking about this topic because it explains sooo much!!

that's why I've ALWAYS been put off by things like politics and religion, it basically replaces the ability to understand nuance with fear of anything other than whatever that institution is pushing. we are so pushed and propogandized to be ONLY be "good" that we deny the part of ourselves that are neutral or even dare I say evil, until they explode in unmanageable or even dangerous forms. violence exists in nature, there's no removing it, it's a part of existence and we have to get over that. I'm definitely not saying everyone else should just flip and be cruel to one another, but being passive to avoid being "evil" ALL the time is what allows these institutions to move in and take advantage of us in the first place, they've removed the ability for people to defend their own minds.
