I remember being 18 I had just joined and I went to Processing (where they Process your information and give you you're gear before you officially go to Basic Training) and it was Christmas so they had my group gather in the small auditorium and they played war movies all day, a little Christmas gift I guess. Anyways I sat in the back and slept through most of the movies but I woke up briefly when they put this one on, it was my first time watching it and I didn't go back to sleep. I remember thinking "why are they showing this? don't they want us to stay in?", it was such an anti war, war movie and I looked around at my fellow 18 year old and I could tell no one understood it. They didn't get it, the message the contradiction of it all. It's a different type of isolation to be in a room full of what once where your peers and friends and realizing that you're different actually, that you've suddenly taken a different road than everyone else and you're the only on to look back and see the split. That was the last movie they showed us before lunch then we we're in the barracks for the rest of the day, no one talked about Full Metal Jacket. It was as if the movie didn't exist, as if it only had an effect on me and no one else.
