@cogito.rebellion: part 423 | what have you seen emptied that later showed you what it had always contained? what porchia is pointing at exactly? this is one of the strangest and most precise sentences in the entire collection. the logic runs backwards from how most people think about emptiness. usually we treat the emptying of something as a loss, a subtraction, an ending. what porchia is saying is that the emptying is also a revelation. when everything that was filling a thing has left, the shape of what it was holding becomes visible for the first time. grief does this. the person who has lost someone they loved discovers, in the loss, exactly how much of their life had been structured around that presence. the presence itself made it invisible, the way water in a glass cannot show you the glass's shape as clearly as the empty glass can. you see the container only when the contents are gone. the same process happens with certainty, with identity, with belief. the person who has had their convictions stripped away, their self-image dismantled, their plans collapse completely, is standing very close to something most people never approach: an accurate sense of what those things were actually doing in their life. what they were filling. what shape they took. why they were there. porchia does not say the person has arrived. he says they are close to knowing. the emptiness itself is not the knowledge. it is the condition that makes the knowledge possible, if the person can stay inside it long enough rather than rushing to fill the space again. who was porchia? antonio porchia was born in italy in 1886 and emigrated to argentina after his father's death. self-educated, he worked as a printer and later tended a garden. voices was his only book, first published privately in buenos aires in 1943. jorge luis borges, andré breton, and henry miller all admired his work. w.s. merwin translated voices into english in 1969. porchia died in 1968. #porchia #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #existentialism #dailyquotes
