A Hundred Years, and Still Too Dangerous for a Prayer By Mihar Dias Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad turns 100 on July 10th — a milestone in any country, an unrepeatable moment in history. But in Malaysia, rather than mark it with dignity, decency, or even mild acknowledgement, it seems the authorities would rather pretend it’s not happening. Plans for a simple kenduri doa selamat and tahlil at Masjid Wilayah were quietly drawn up by his family. Nothing grand, nothing political. Just prayers for a man who has outlived kings, premiers, presidents and most of his own political proteges. But apparently, in Madani Malaysia, even a birthday prayer can be subversive. Reports suggest the mosque suddenly scheduled a Maulidur Rasul event on the very same evening, effectively disrupting the planned gathering. Coincidence? Only the blissfully naive would think so. In a country where politics is embedded in funeral prayers and fruit bans, this reeks of petty bureaucracy and paper-thin insecurity. It’s almost laughable. This is a man who twice led the nation, who modernised Malaysia’s infrastructure, grew its economy, and left behind a complicated but undeniable legacy. At 100, most would be garlanded, photographed, and toasted. Here, they get red tape. The irony? The government could’ve gained a little grace by allowing it. No speeches, no banners, no drama. Just a prayer for an old man, long past his political prime. But even that seems too risky in a nation so terrified of its own past. Because to honour Mahathir, even in prayer, is to remember a time when leadership wasn’t this petty. So let it be said: if you fear a frail 100-year-old man with a Yassin in his hand, the problem isn’t him — it’s you. Perhaps someone in the Madani government ought to reflect on that. Who knows? God might just bless them in return. FB RAHIM SAID
