horse flies are like mosquitoes in the sense they both crave blood. mosquitoes will numb you when biting and make you a little itchy with a bump afterwards. horse flies will aggressive fly at your head, land on place that's worst to be bitten, and use their razor teeth to gnaw off your skin to get to your blood, and it's worse for your pets since they can't swat them away. I have empathy for most insect life, but when it comes to horseflies i feel genuine pleasure when i kill them.

A horse fly clung to the hood of my car for 30 minutes and I reached speeds of 65 and he just stared at me through my windshield 😭 they’re spiteful and way too smart for me bro

I was attacked by what I thought was a hornet. It was a giant horse fly on my back. Literally clawing and chewing on me. I didn’t know these things existed

No one understands the fear a horsefly chasing you on your horse for 10 minutes straight causes. Every time the mf lands your horse just loses their shit and it’s impossible to smack it 😭

Oh my gosh one time when I was kid I was hiking with my parents and horse flys kept hitting the back of my legs and they weren’t biting anyone else and I kept telling my parents asking them for bug spray or smth and they kept going “Zoey you’re fine they don’t even hurt and they aren’t biting me” and then we got back to our camper and my mom goes “oh my gosh Zoey what’s on your legs!?!” And we looked and I had literally dozens of bites all over my legs and I was so pissed for the rest of the trip

yesterday i was knocking them out midair with a stick and ripping their wings off. i somehow perfectly sliced one in half, it crawled around without an abdomen for like 30 mins and i felt evil for being so amused by its suffering. LET THEM ALL DIE

A core memory I have is running from horse flies and jumping in my mom’s car to get away, as she drove they literally chased the car and were hitting the back window trying to get to us…. Horror movie stuff

One got in the house with me and was on the ceiling and I was sobbing because I had no way to kill it and then it’s dumb fat ass fell off the ceiling and landed on the floor and got stuck on its back 😂 I seized my opportunity and stomped his ass, I’m so grateful I got the worlds dumbest horsefly lol

Actually horseflies prefer to detect their prey using polarized light: water reflects polarized light so you’re essentially invisible in their preferred spectrum until you pop out and show your own unique polarized signal again.
