Ok possibly hot take, but i feel like the people who act like law school is border line impossible and say you will have no life outside of it are people who purposely picked the “easier” majors in undergrad so they could get a high gpa. When they got to law school and are actually challenged with both the content and workload it feels extremely overwhelming to them to the point it comsumes their life. It always bothers me when i see people recommending people to do a major they know they can get a high gpa in bc i feel like its setting them up to be unprepared for the work ethic they will need

IVE ALWAYS SAID THIS!! The fear-mongering is sooo nauseating and sometimes feels like people only do it to prop themselves up about having gone through it — like the haves and have nots. 1L was finneee substantively — my biggest challenge came with managing personalities and having folk in my business. Minus that, 1L would’ve been a breezeee.

It’s hard for first gen students. We didn’t even have parents who went to college. Navigating these spaces and career paths is hard. No financial support, no empathy, no plan b- that stress alone can consume someone. I have a Master’s degree from a top school, have been a paralegal for 5 years and 1L has been hard for me. It is what it is.

I worked part-time through 1L and still had time for hobbies, friends, etc. Having a balance between school and life helped me recharge and refocus to learn efficiently. If you’re spending all your time on school, you’ll burn out!!

As someone who went to medical school then law school: medical school is 10000x harder than you think. Law school isn’t difficult at all, just takes time management and discipline. That’s all.

Agreed 100%! I’m about to start 2L and I’m genuinely so excited to talk to the 1Ls and tell them exactly this. It is not nearly as bad as people made it seem. Finals is the only time where I felt like law school was consuming my life.

Thank you saying this!! I start my 1L in a few weeks and everything I have been hearing was stressing me out lol. Especially because I studied biology in undergrad and thought that took a lot of time and effort so I started to doubt myself 😭

i second this as a 2L and first gen law student. it’s a lot of work but it should not be your whole life!! first sem is stressful because you are learning so many new skills, but you get the hang of it quickly and it never pays off to let it consume your life
